Am still waiting for our little girl to come out but she seems to be very comfortable inside me. Sigh… While waiting, I went through some of my old photo collection and came about this set of photos taken last year at the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. Hope you like them as much as I enjoyed them. :)

Slideshow – Asther Lau Photography Portfolio: You Are Beautiful

My simple yet “done with much love” portfolio is finally completed! I’ve uploaded it onto my NEW WEBSITE under “GALLERY” but for those with very low internet bandwidth, you’ll find it a little frustrating to load the page. I can’t seem to be able to embed the slideshow in this wordpress blog, so click the photo-link below to get to the (faster loading) HTML page.

 Welcome to my photography blog!

I am a Malaysian female photographer based in Kuala Lumpur/Selangor that loves any kind of photography listing from nature to skyscrapers, weddings & events, and especially portraitures for pregnant families, newborn babies, couples & families.

I am also an avid scuba diver which enables me to capture amazing underwater images from all around the world.

This blog follows both my professional life (as well as) some of my personal life, featuring “MOMENTS” from the maternity & newborn sessions, weddings & beautiful people I managed to capture with my lens, the places I travel and the friends and family members that mean so much to me.

It also contains random information source for my current and potential clients as I’ll (from time to time) provide some useful links of wedding tips & what-nots for your ”surfing” pleasures. I hope this blog will also be a source of inspiration and education for other photographers.

This site is a little more informal and I just want to give everyone a sense of who I am, and what I am all about.

Do feel absolutely free to leave comments or post questions. You can also contact me further at enquiry@astherlau.com for other booking enquiries.

Nature: Butterflies l Butterfly Garden l Kuala Lumpur l Malaysia

On a lighter note, here are some pics taken in January during my rendezvous with dear Alison to the Butterfly Park in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Don’t have my PC with me, so can’t edit the pics nicer.

We had a wonderful, peaceful time in the little park. Lovely place to appreciate the nature while enjoying the beautiful flowers & butterflies & other insects living in the park. We’re planning to return to that place again. Hopefully one day soon…

I miss my photography sessions. Maybe I’ll try to take some hours off from the hospital one day to do some photography here in my hometown.

Travel: Back from Miri – An Eventful Trip l Miri l Sarawak l Malaysia

PHEW! Back in ONE PIECE after 3 1/2 long days in Miri, Sarawak. We were supposed to be on a diving trip to this part of Borneo Island during the weekend. However, we had more than a diving trip than what we planned from months ago.

Early Thursday morning, both darling & I arrived at LCC terminal for our AirAsia direct flight to Miri. Then, our first “disaster” happened. One of our friend arrived 10 mins late & we were not allowed to check-in our huge diving bags as AirAsia’s luggage counter for our flight has been closed. We tried our best to negotiate & begged for help but to no avail. Our conclusion is… CHEAP AIRLINE, LOW LEVEL OF CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Thus, we have to do something as we’ve the whole weekend ahead of us planned only in Miri! Immediately I decided to try our luck with Malaysian Airlines. We managed to get a direct flight to Miri that very afternoon so after some calculation & much ponderings, we decided to go ahead with the trip.

We arrived at the little “city” late afternoon, too late for any diving, hence we decided to spend some time in the swimpool at the hotel. Late evening, we went to a nice seafood restaurant & ate wonderful dishes of all kinds. It was so cheap too & we were happy despite an awful beginning earlier that day.

The next day, we had to wake up early for 3 boat dives off Miri coast. Once again, God gave us a very TRYING day. The wind started to pick up from the very beginning of our 45 mins journey to our first dive site. First dive was fantastic with clear visibility & lots to see.

However, the day slowly started to go wrong. One of our friend fell terribly ill from all the rough rocking on the boat as we had to spend our surface interval on board in the middle of open sea! Underwater current was picking up too which made us pretty tired & underwater visibility poorer & poorer.

Last dive was a nightmare to me when darling Francis & 2 divers went missing from our dive group. We abandoned our dive & went searching for them with the boat. As sea was rough, it was hard for us to find their bubbles so I decided to get the boat captain to rave the boat engine in hope than darling will hear it & put out his surface buoy. Phew! And HE DID! I was nearly at the verge of loosing my mind, with bad old memories coming back to haunt me that very moment. I THANK GOD with my whole heart for keeping darling safe & sound. When he surfaced, I managed to keep myself calm without shouting at him or the rest of the divers. They were clearly unaware of how anxious we were on the boat while searching for them.

Upon reaching back to the marina, our seasick friend livened up within seconds on dry land. We returned back to the hotel, exhausted & looking forward for a nice long shower. Darling Francis took a nap from 6pm & didn’t wake up till the next morning! I went for another pleasant dinner nearby our hotel with Ghee Seng & return to hotel, slumped into bed by midnite.

The next day, we decided to not dive seeing the wind was still blowing strong. We could see the rough sea from our room balcony. Instead, we decided to rent a car & go trekking to Niah Caves. We went to have a local brunch of Kolo Mee at a nearby stall before we start on our journey.

Once again, God decided to give us another eventful moment during our 1 1/2 hrs drive to the site. We had a puncture on one of the tyre. Darling Francis had to change the tyre & then we went looking for a tyre shop to repair the punctured one. We finally arrived the park entrance at 2pm. After paying the park fee, we took a short boat trip to cross a river, then went on foot for 3km to the cave.

As we were not prepared for such a journey, I didn’t have a proper footwear for the walk. After nearly 2.5km, I started to have blisters on both my feet. Lucky I brought along our medi-kit & I managed to “plaster” both my feet so I can continue the journey.

It was breathtaking to enjoy the rainforest & wonderful smell of nature all around us. I had a great time taking pics during our walk. Upon arrival at the opening of the cave, I decided to surrender to my aching feet. We didn’t walk the whole way into the cave, but the scenery at the cave opening was grand enough for us already.

After resting for half hour, we decided to head back. We stopped at a small hut with local Iban ladies selling souveniors of beads, hand-made textiles & soft drinks. We contributed some for these wonderful ladies & bought a drink each while I bought their wonderful bead bracelets.

The walk back was just as nice although I was beginning to wish I brought my mosquito repellent with me. Finally, we got into our car & reached back to the hotel without much unwanted incident.

We met up with Mike (another diver friend who’s working in Brunei) & had another sumptuos seafood dinner. As the day was an adventurous one for us, we decided to head back to the hotel for an early night instead of accepting Mike’s offer to bring us for some drinking at their local bars.

Finally this morning, we woke up early & left for the airport in time for check-in & breakfast. Once again, the cheap AirAsia airline failed us. Ouf flight was delayed for 50 mins, hence we had to hang around without having much to do, wishing we had more time in bed this morning.

Thankfully, our trip back to Kuala Lumpur was a pleasant one, with slight turbulence due to bad weather.

Despite with all these events, we decided to return again to Miri next year during their best time for diving (around April to June) & hope to dive at more of their wonderful dive sites. We were happy with the outcome of this trip as we managed to have a memorable trip although not as planned. At least we’ve been to Niah Cave,
one of the great wonders of Malaysia!

Now, I’m looking forward for more wonderful time in Mabul starting tomorrow. I pray God will protect myself & Vivian during the 5-days trip.

Travel: July 2006 – Road Trip l Bali l Indonesia

During our road trip from Tulamben to our private villa stay in Gianyar, we passed by a few scenic places along the way. There were many padi fields, corn fields and lushful jungles in Bali. We managed to catch a glimpse of an old volcanoe too!

Travel: Tulamben l Bali l Indonesia

Francis & I had recently return from a relaxing & refreshing trip to Bali. We stayed in a wonderful paradise called Tauch Terminal Tulamben Resort in Tulamben for the first 2 nights. We did some diving in Tulamben & had a great time underwater. We also had a spa session in this resort. To my pleasant surprise, darling Francis actually liked the massage session very much! (cos he’s never a fan for massage-spa thingy)

Here are some photos taken in the Tulamben resort we were staying. All photos here were taken with my new Canon 30D.

We later moved to a romantic villa called Peruna Saba Villa in Gianyar for the remaining 2 nights stay. We did nothing there but relax & swim at our private pool & sleep. The scenery there was breath-taking with vast padi field & the sound of nature at the background.

We also took a day trip down to Kuta for some shopping & sightseeing. On the last day, we went for a short visit to the birdpark which I enjoyed immensely by taking lots of pics with my new camera!
I thought I’d share some of the pics taken from the trip but will have to do this in parts as I’ll need time to process my RAW images to JPEG format. Hence, there will be more blogs about our Bali trip soon!

Travel: Layang-Layang Island Memories l Sabah l Malaysia

It’s been 4 days since I’m back to civilisation. My dearest friends back in Layang-Layang were asking me how have I been since I left them. So, how am I really??? Hmmm… let’s see…

I left KL in a poor state of mind. The incident back in February was so fresh in my mind & I wasn’t very sure I’m ready to work in Layang-Layang at all. However, I am very lucky to have true friends who encouraged me & constantly have faith on me. I finally picked up my courage & packed my bags, got on the plane to KK then Layang-Layang.

Upon arrival at the island, I was greeted by all the familiar faces & environment around me. At once, I felt at ease with just a little tinge of nervousness. The first week being there wasn’t easy… I was haunted by the flashbacks of the past & I get nervous everytime I went underwater. Good thing I was given a chance to dive leisurely for a few days in the name of “checking out the site” & familiarising myself to the dive operation again.

My fellow colleagues were wonderfully supportive and understanding so in no time, I managed to relax. The first two times when I was given the role as a dive leader, I can feel myself being really nervous. Alway checking behind me, being paranoid, to ensure ALL my divers were still in my view. I was told that I was being a little over cautious. Ah well!!!
Day by day, I begun to loosen up. Two days before my birthday, God gave me a wonderful gift… A CHANCE TO BE WITH 2 SPERM WHALES! We snorkeled with these beautiful beasts for half hour. Weather was beautiful & sea was breezy.
Seeing & being with so many amazing creatures had slowly helped me to come in term with the past. Talking about AMAZING CREATURES… This season in Layang-Layang was exceptionally brilliant for me.
  1. I had countless close encounters with the hammerhead sharks here. Be it single or in school, they never fail to take my breath away.
  2. Not forgetting the sperm whales. There were 3 of them, however, we managed to snorkel with only 2. Nevertheless, it was “A Chance-in-a-Lifetime” for me!
  3. The school of mobula devilrays are more adventurous this year. I had the luck to dive with many many many at most dive sites.
  4. I had the luck of seeing my first pair of WILD ORCAS @ Killer Whales too. A male & female swimming on the surface of water while I was on the dive boat. Too bad weather was stormy and there were other boats around which might have made the pair nervous. Although the ‘early birds’ managed to get really close to the pair, & 2 divers were so lucky enough to snorkel with them too.
  5. My closest encounter with a manta this season. Also, had countless of sighting of this wonderful creature. I’m not sure if there are many different individuals, but I managed to identify 2 individuals which came to our reef very often. Or maybe these 2 are the residents of Layang-Layang?
  6. I had a 3-seconds glimpse of my FIRST WHALE SHARK. Thanks to one of my fellow diver who were more excited than I was & zoomed towards the gentle giant before anyone realised what happened. Maybe next time… Sigh…
  7. I created history in Layang-Layang by being the first to record the finding of pigmy seahorses. Eversince my first find, we’ve found several others to a total of 12 pigmy seahorses at several dive sites to date. I wish to find another species however time did not permit. I pray I’ll get another chance next year!
  8. I will never forget my encounter with a massive shark which I think was a Tiger Shark at The Point this year. After going through many books & discussion with my fellow colleagues, I’ve decided this mystery shark might be the rare Tiger Shark which was sighted twice for the past 10 years.

During my stay on the island, I constantly miss home & everyone dear to me. I thought I’d be really happy when the day comes for me to leave and return home. However, when it did happen, I surprised myself by being really sad & melancholy. I felt as if my heart was broken for leaving this wonderful place which I can call my home too. Also leaving my precious & dear friends whom shared both the good and hard times with me. I’ll never forget their sincere hearts that fought together alongside with me in the name of “taking care of the safety of our divers & to ensure fun to all”. We kept each other company & no one was left feeling lonely or alienated. This is the BIGGEST FAMILY I ever had!

Maybe one day we will be together again. I’m leaving that to God. In the meantime, I have to be strong to live on from where I am now. All I pray is that God will show me a path that leads on to a wonderful life ahead. Hence the end of a summary of my sweet moments in Layang-Layang.
